The Madawaska Kanu Centre (MKC) is the world’s oldest whitewater canoeing and kayaking school - started in 1972 by Hermann & Christa Kerckhoff. Now in the hands of their daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Dirk Van Wijk, it has combined with OWL Rafting to offer Whitewater rafting rides as well as instructional courses in whitewater boating.
MKC is located on the Madawaska River between Bark Lake and Kamaniskeg Lake. They offer both 5 day as well as 2 day weekend courses for all skill levels. The 5 day course offers more challenging rapids on the Madawaska & Ottawa River. I was only there during the 2 day course but have been told that Monday – Thursday – the Madawaka River has a controlled release of water to create the rapids from the OPG dams – on Fridays – the students get to travel down the Ottawa River rapids.
For the 2 day weekend course, most of the time was spend at the Palmer Rapids – also created by the release of water from OPG dams.
Our host over the weekend was Katrina Van Wijks – granddaughter of the founders and the wonderful staff at MKC.
Below are some images from the 2 day weekend course in mid August of 2013.
